Sedna: Descent Into the Depths, Rise as a Goddess
In the mythology of the Arctic peoples, Sedna is the Ocean Mother, the keeper of the deep waters, and the guardian of sea life. She was a human but through betrayal by the masculine she was transformed and reborn into a goddess. We connect with Sedna is to enter into the underworld of our own lives, to surrender what no longer serves us, what has been cut away, and to rise as something more vast than we imagined possible.
The Myth of Sedna
Sedna’s story begins as a young woman living with her father. In some tellings, she refused all suitors, content in her own sovereignty. In others, she was tricked into marrying a man who revealed himself to be a spirit in disguise. When she cried out for help, her father came to rescue her in a kayak on the ocean. On the journey home they were met with a violent storm.
Terrified for his own life, her father cast Sedna overboard. She clung to the side of the kayak, but in his fear, he cut off her fingers one by one. She was afraid to let go, only when all of her fingers were cut off did she fall into the sea. Her severed fingers transformed into seals, whales, and all the creatures of the ocean. Sedna sank into the depths, confronting her own darkness and abysse. Only then did she become the ruler of the underworld ocean, the Mother of all sea beings.
Sednea endured betrayal and abandonment and yes she was reborn as a goddess. Her myth reminds us that we may be clinging onto outdated beliefs or stories and that we must let go to be reborn. That the pain of betrayal and rejection can hold the seeds for new creation.
Questions For Reflection
Where am I still clinging to the boat—afraid of being cast into the unknown?
What parts of me have been cut off, numbed, or denied—and how might they hold the seeds of new creation?
Where am I betraying myself out of fear, rather than trusting the descent?
What is my relationship with the divine masculine?
Invitation to Transformation
Sedna calls us to face the deep underworld. Where the pressure and darkness dissolve what we once thought we were. In her realm, human wounds become goddess power, betrayal becomes sovereignty, and loss becomes creation.
When you choose to sink into your depths instead of clinging to the shore, you step into Sedna’s initiatory current: the current that transforms us from human into goddess, from survivor into creator. And you don’t have to walk this path alone. This is exactly the kind of deep work I support my clients with through my coaching practice.
If you’re ready to alchemize betrayal and abandonment into a new version of you, I am here for it. Together we rise.
